A quick look at the 40’s

Ah the 40’s! Who haven’t heard about James Stewart, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Edward G Robinson, Cary Grant or Clark Gable? While the 40’s brought us a lot of great romantic comedies, the beginning of the 1940’s was not promising for the global film industry, especially after the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese. Nevertheless, with new technology and the ability to improve the technical challenges from the 30’s, the film industry is able to rebound and even make gains. Advances in the movie technology include better lightning, sound recording, more special effects and the greatest advancement, the use of colors. The 1940’s brings us that more “modern” look. While most producers and movie-makers tried to capture the present moment with a lot of war-related and anti-fascist movies, many producers were able to give their audience a break from what was happening around them with romantic comedies.

Casablanca Two-Disc Special Edition 1943 One the production from the 1940’s combined wartime propaganda and romance : Casablanca. Released in 1942, this movie tells the story about the disillusion of a night club owner (played by Humphrey Bogart) and his former lover (played by Ingrid Bergman) during wartime. This nearly perfect movie still wow viewers from around the world today. Casablanca was released on DVD in 2000 and the special 2-disc edition was released in 2003.

But not all films focused on the war. Other movies gave the viewer a place to escape from the reality, an escapist entertainment looking back at happier days of America, such as romantic comedies like His Girl Friday.
