A quick look at the 60’s

The 60’s marks the transition of America and Europe to changes, between the after-war period to social progressive values, and will see an increase of political awareness and and the cry for liberty of women. Those social trends will will peak in the 70’s. The 60’s is a turbulent decade, full of changes, advancements but also tragedies. The film industry is reflected by those new social values and events, but also by the emergence of Rock’N Roll and fashion. The popularity of Barbie among young girls, the creation of the twist dance, the death of Marilyn Monroe, the assassination of J.F. Kennedy, Women’s Liberation, the Beatles, the apparition of the miniskirt, the beginning of Woodstock and Summer of Love in San Fran, the assassination of Martin Luther King, racial stereotyping protestations, the first man on the moon with Apollo 11 and the first heart transplant are all events and tragedies that happened and influenced the 60’s.

Cinema wise, the film industry reached it’s all time low, because of high cost of production and the lost cost of movie tickets. To counter this problem, multiplex theaters were created and due to financial difficulties, smaller studios were quickly purchased by multinational companies.
