Woody Allen career was still rising as a comedian when he wrote and starred in Annie Hall, a semi-autobiographical movie, which will mark his career as his biggest breakthrough triumph. Annie Hall features an Academy Award winning Best Actress Diane Keaton who is in a relationship with the urban neurotic Allen (Alvy Singer). Annie Hall is probably, to this date, one of the most genuine and bittersweet romances you can find in a movie. While it can be truthfully be called a romantic comedy, Annie Hall, is much more than that, it is also a very philosophical movie. Annie Hall is a major turning point and one of the best romantic stories told on the big screen.

Manhattan is the most complete movie directed by and starring Woody Allen. The movies is beautifully filmed all in black and white is about a group of urbane but neurotic people from Manhattan in search of fulfillment and happiness, depicting their weaknesses, their loves, their worries and frustrations. The movie features the relationship between Allen, a 42 years-old man, and a 17 year-old girlfriend (Mariel Hemingway). Manhattan is a classic and, with Annie Hall, is one of Woody Allen’s masterpiece.

A quick look at the 70’s

Free love, the increasing change in gender roles, the use of drugs are the big impacts of this decade, which certainly showed

The hippie movement, the civil rights movement, free love, the growth of rock and roll, changing gender roles and drug use certainly had an impact. This new counter culture certainly also had some impacts on the film industry. The 70’s also saw the rise of a new genre of film makers and young film makers.
