Chick Flick Movies

The Notebook kiss

Are you, like me, a fan of witty and silly Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde, playboy Hugh Grant in… well hum all of his movies, or the passionate love between Leo and Kate in Titanic… we just can’t help it, we, women just love chick flick movies.

What are chick flick movies?

So what are are chick flick movie? Chick flick movies are movies that are meant to be watch over and over again, often in the company of a bowl of popcorn in one hand, and a box of Kleenex, without getting bored. Usually ending with a happy ending (99% of the time), they are comforting, whether you are single looking for something to lift up your spirit, to give you some hope after a break up of, or just for some entertainment on a boring evening. Chick flick movies are usually pretty obvious : How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Bridget Jones’s Diary. What are the ingredients that we, girls and women, just love so much. Critics usually give them an awful rating because they are, let’s admit it, usually flimsy.Chick flicks are usually not Oscar winning movies and have a strong girl appeal. So what make chick flick movies a chick flick movie that appeal to girls?

What makes good chick flick movies?

Well the ingredients of chick flick movies are recurrent… To make a great chick flick movie, it is essential to stick to the essentials.

The next-door girl heroine.
Because we like to be able to identify ourselves the heroine. Chick flick movies are not about royalty, but about the girl next-door with a boring job, some great friends, such as Jennifer Anniston in The Break-Up or Katherine Heigl in 27 Dresses. She can either be looking for the love of her life, or have lost complete faith in men (see Kelli Williams in A Boyfriend for Christmas).

Bridget Jones, is simply the girl next-door

Bridget Jones, is simply the girl next-door

Cute or handsome hero
Then comes the hero. And in chick flick movies, we like them yummy… handsome. However, there is not one type, the range is wide, very wide, from the conventional good boy with the great heart to the bad boy. Hugh Grant in Four Weddings and a Funeral to the sweaty bad boy Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing, the playboy Matthew McConaughey in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, our prince charming comes in all types and flavors. They usually have a great body like Ryan Reynolds in The Proposal, but are sometimes simply the cute boy next-door like Tom Hanks in You’ve Got Mail.

Hugh Grant one of Britain's best known faces of chick flicks

Hugh Grant one of Britain's best known faces of chick flicks

Some close friends
Because they need to confide themselves with them, when things turn sour. Again, in chick flick movies, they come in all genres, the one best friend Suzy from Sleepless in Seattle, George the gay friend in My Best Friend’s Wedding, the group of friends (Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda) from Sex and the City

Julia Roberts in my best friend wedding and Rupert Everett, the gay friend in whom she find a great confident

Who makes a better confident than a gay friend like in My Best Friend's Wedding?

The issues
Throw her some rocks, give her some obstacle she needs to overcome. In chick flick movies, we don’t want it to be too easy for either the heroine or the hero. Make the heroine choose between her fiance (who obviously prefers his career over her) and that new hero, make the heroine believe that her soon-to-be prince charming is a horrible selfish person when he really has a big heart…

Talk about issues... Ask Carrie in Sex and the City

Talk about issues... Ask Carrie from Sex and the City

A great soundtrack
All chick flick movies have great soundtrack, so you can remember them. A great soundtrack will give you the opportunity of remembering a movie and possibly watch it again… Plus if they fit well with the movie, they might help bring some tears…

The soundtrack from Titanic, one of the best chick flick soundtrack ever

The soundtrack from Titanic, one of the best chick flick soundtrack ever

Happily ever after
Hope and optimism are essential in good chick flick movies. You must believe that there is a chance that the hero and the heroine can make things work. While there is a happy ending in 99% of chick flick movies, chick flick movies can sometimes have a sad ending, such as The Notebook. But that’s okay, we girls, all like a good cry once in a while.

In Enchanted, Giselle sure knows something about happily ever after...

In Enchanted, Giselle sure knows something about happily ever after...

So these are the right ingredients for a good chick flick movie. Of course, not all chick flick movies follow that exact recipe, but will have many of the main ingredients we love so much. To consult our chick flick movies selection.

The 1980’s era has brought much more loud, simplistic and flashy movies than the previous eras. The 80’s is the decade of the big blockbusters, with movies targeting large audiences and multiplexes theaters. Big action movies such as Indiana Jones and Batman or comedies such as Beverly Hills Cop are big examples of blockbusters made during the 1980’s. A quick look at the 60’s

The 60’s marks the transition of America and Europe to changes, between the after-war period to social progressive values, and will see an increase of political awareness and and the cry for liberty of women. Those social trends will will peak in the 70’s. The 60’s is a turbulent decade, full of changes, advancements but also tragedies. The film industry is reflected by those new social values and events, but also by the emergence of Rock’N Roll and fashion. The popularity of Barbie among young girls, the creation of the twist dance, the death of Marilyn Monroe, the assassination of J.F. Kennedy, Women’s Liberation, the Beatles, the apparition of the miniskirt, the beginning of Woodstock and Summer of Love in San Fran, the assassination of Martin Luther King, racial stereotyping protestations, the first man on the moon with Apollo 11 and the first heart transplant are all events and tragedies that happened and influenced the 60’s.

Cinema wise, the film industry reached it’s all time low, because of high cost of production and the lost cost of movie tickets. To counter this problem, multiplex theaters were created and due to financial difficulties, smaller studios were quickly purchased by multinational companies.

As a matter of fact, some of the biggest fast food chains were founded in the 1950’s, such as McDonalds, Jack in the Box, A&W and much more. The 1950’s also represents the baby boomer, electric appliances and a great development for the film industry : the rising popularity of drive-in theaters for younger viewers. The 1950’s is also influence by the need of new symbols of rebellion. A quick look at the 40’s

Ah the 40’s! Who haven’t heard about James Stewart, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Edward G Robinson, Cary Grant or Clark Gable? While the 40’s brought us a lot of great romantic comedies, the beginning of the 1940’s was not promising for the global film industry, especially after the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese. Nevertheless, with new technology and the ability to improve the technical challenges from the 30’s, the film industry is able to rebound and even make gains. Advances in the movie technology include better lightning, sound recording, more special effects and the greatest advancement, the use of colors. The 1940’s brings us that more “modern” look. While most producers and movie-makers tried to capture the present moment with a lot of war-related and anti-fascist movies, many producers were able to give their audience a break from what was happening around them with romantic comedies.

Casablanca Two-Disc Special Edition 1943 One the production from the 1940’s combined wartime propaganda and romance : Casablanca. Released in 1942, this movie tells the story about the disillusion of a night club owner (played by Humphrey Bogart) and his former lover (played by Ingrid Bergman) during wartime. This nearly perfect movie still wow viewers from around the world today. Casablanca was released on DVD in 2000 and the special 2-disc edition was released in 2003.

But not all films focused on the war. Other movies gave the viewer a place to escape from the reality, an escapist entertainment looking back at happier days of America, such as romantic comedies like His Girl Friday.
